SUMMARY:Improvement without Gentrification: Designing and Building Sidewalk Living Rooms [workshop]
DESCRIPTION:Through his work in Los Angeles and Oakland over the past 10 years\, Steve Rasmussen Cancian has become a specialist in neighborhood improvement projects designed to serve the existing community and not attract\, or even repeal\, gentrifiers.  The goal of his work is to create a better neighborhood for the same neighbors. In this all day design-build workshop\, Cancian will lead participants in planning and building a sidewalk livingroom designed to improve Washington Park for current residents without catalyzing gentrification.   The hope is to set the foundation for a local effort to use art and design to incrementally improve the neighborhood for current residents. \n

SUMMARY:Big Ideas with Dream It. Grow It. [workshop]
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS POSTPONED UNTIL AUGUST \n  \nGardens are being established with increasing frequency in the urban environs\, yet design basics and opportunities for inclusivity are being overlooked. To tackle this problem\, Chicago-based S.I. participants Yael Breimer and Allie O’Neill have created an approachable tool\, Dream It. Grow It.\, that educates users about the design process\, broadens definitions of the term “garden\,” and introduces concepts of universal design and accessibility for all. This workshop introduces the first of a three-step design process\, Dream It\, that promotes free thought and cooperative design\, while challenging people to imagine big. \n
