SUMMARY:Improvement without Gentrification: Designing and Building Sidewalk Living Rooms [workshop]
DESCRIPTION:Through his work in Los Angeles and Oakland over the past 10 years\, Steve Rasmussen Cancian has become a specialist in neighborhood improvement projects designed to serve the existing community and not attract\, or even repeal\, gentrifiers.  The goal of his work is to create a better neighborhood for the same neighbors. In this all day design-build workshop\, Cancian will lead participants in planning and building a sidewalk livingroom designed to improve Washington Park for current residents without catalyzing gentrification.   The hope is to set the foundation for a local effort to use art and design to incrementally improve the neighborhood for current residents. \n
